When it comes to understanding the difference between RGB and CMYK, it is important to understand the purpose of each colour space.
RGB stands for Red, Green and Blue and has been around since the 1800s. The model was developed by renowned physicists Thomas Young, Hermann Helmholtz and James Maxwell (to name but a few). Early photographers and televisions used conical-shaped tubes to convert electrical signals into an image. RGB represents the three primary colours of red, green and blue which are combined with light to create a wide variety of colours.
RGB is an additive colour model that is based on light, meaning it adds light to create colour. These colours combine with light to produce a kaleidoscope of colour similar to how our eyes perceive colour and light and produce a seemingly endless array of colours and shades. RGB is the colour model of choice when creating digital images. RGB is also used for TV and digital displays and is the primary colour model for web design.
Unfortunately, this colour model is not perfect as whilst the colours look great on one device, they will look very different on another. This is because the types of LEDs used in devices, which may vary from one manufacturer to the next. The other drawback is that RGB does not print very well, so the images you see on a digital screen may look vibrant but when they are printed, they will look dull and lifeless.
CMYK stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black and is the primary colour model used in commercial printing. CMYK is a subtractive colour model that is based on pigments, meaning it absorbs light to create colour. It is the standard for commercial printing, such as magazines, newspapers, books, and other printed materials. When these colours are combined, they create a range of hues and shades that can be printed on paper.
Another difference between RGB and CMYK is in the number of colours they can produce. RGB can produce 16.7 million colours, while CMYK can only produce around 1,000 colours. This is because CMYK is limited by the inks used in commercial printing, while RGB is not limited by any physical materials.
In conclusion, RGB is considered to be the best colour space for digital graphics, while CMYK is considered to be the best colour space for commercial printing. This is because RGB is designed to produce the most vibrant colours and can be used to create digital graphics that are bright and vivid. CMYK, on the other hand, is designed to produce colours that are more muted and natural looking, which is ideal for printed materials.
